Perennial, scabrid, tendrillar, dioecious, herbaceous, leafy climber. Old stem rather thickened and woody. Leaves petiolate, simple; lamina ovate-cordate to deltoid-cordate, up to 6 (-11) cm x 6 (-11) cm, scabrid-pubescent often prominently white-punctate above, irregularly sinuate-dentate, often 3-lobed, acute. Male flowers whitish, small, in many-flowered axillary fascicles and or subumbellate to subglomerate on long peduncles; hypanthium tube short; calyx lobes linear-denticulate; corolla short campanulate, 5-lobed; stamens 3 with rather long filaments; thecae straight. Female flowers in inflorescences similar to male flowers; calyx and corolla similar to those of male flowers; staminode 3, subulate; ovary globose, separated by a slender neck below the perianth; disc around the base of style prominent; style rather long; stigmas 3, bilobed, Fruit small red berries up to c. 12 mm across.
