SUMMARY
Annual or woody-based perennial herbs or small shrubs. Leaves alternate or the lowermost opposite, petiolate to subsessile. Inflorescence solitary axillary usually arranged in bracteates racemes. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, the lobes linear, equal. Corolla bilabiate, usually personate, spurred; upper lip 2-lobed, erect, lower lip 3-lobed. Stamens 4, didynamous, included. Capsule globose to ovoid, the 2 chambers equal or somewhat unequal, dehiscing by 2 lateral deciduous or persistent lids or slits or indehiscent.
It includes c. 50 species of which 10 or more are found in Saudi Arabia.
