Family: Amaryllidaceae
SUMMARY
Perennial scapose herbs with bulbs. Leaves linear. Scapes bearing 1-many-flowered, umbellate inflorescence subtended by 1-2, spathaceous bracts. Flowers white or with shades of greenish or yellowish, usually opening by evening, delicate and dying away next day before noon. Perianth forming a long, cylindrical tube ending in 6 linear lobes and with prominent, delicate, membranous, cupulate, 6-12-lobed corona. Stamens borne on the rim of the corona, the corona itself being a structure formed by the fusion of expanded filament bases. Ovary 3-chambered, each with many ovules in each cham the ovules arranged one above the other. Fruit subglobose capsule. Seeds black, angular, or winged.
It includes 16 species of which 3 are found in Saudi Arabia. Pancratium canariense Ker-Gawl. is often seen a cultivated ornamental.
Note: Hymenocallis Salisb., an American genus resembles Pancratium very much, but it has only 2 (rarely 8) ovules per chamber and the ovules are basal. Also, the seeds are usually green. These are known as Spider Lilies.
