A much branched, prickly, low shrub. Branches grey to greyish-white with irregularly arranged, small prickles. Leaves petiolate, bipinnate compound pinnae usually 3 5 pairs : leaflets up to 12 pairs per pinna, up to about 5 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, acute. Petiole and rachis together usually about 3 cm long but range between 2.5 to 6 cm; the rachis projecting beyond the last pinna-pair as a thin, fine point. Inflorescence a white spike up to about 10 cm long. Calyx cupulate, shortly toothed, about 1 mm long. Corolla about 3 mm long : petals creamy-white. Fruit turgid, terete, irregular, rather thick, purple, or purplish-red, up to about 5 cm long, 2 cm across.
Saudi Arabia : Widely distributed, often a serious weed.
Distribution : North Africa, Middle East, C.Asia, Pakistan, NW India.
