Diagnostic description:
Intricately much-branched, spinous, shrubby plant up to c. 50 cm tall, but often grazed down to stumps. Branches slender, twiggy. Leaflets usually 3 (-7), opposite, elliptic to oblanceolate, up to 4 (-9) x 2 (-4) mm, obtuse. Inflorescence 2-5-flowered, axillary raceme, with thin, needle-like spinous-tipped axis, persisting as thin, needle-like spines. Flowers pale scarlet, c. 8 mm long. Pods straight (not torulose), 6-9-seeded, ± tetragonal, up to c. 22 mm long.
